JCR hustings tonight

Right before the film society, at 8pm, the JCR hustings will take place. This is the opportunity for candidates running for contested positions to speak, and for you to ask questions. So, be there or be square. In JCR.

Film society tonight

The film society will be showing tonight the Vietnamese “Scent of Green Papaya”, which is described by Wikipedia thusly: “A young girl, Mui, becomes a servant for a rich family. The family consists of a frequently absent husband, a wife and two young boys. When the husband leaves, he takes all the household’s money. As Mui grows up, the family falls on hard times, and eventually she becomes a servant for a pianist who befriends the family. That man is engaged to be married, but he prefers playing the piano to spending time with his fiance. One night, after blowing off his fiance yet again, the pianist sleeps with Mui. The engagement is broken off. The pianist starts teaching Mui how to read. A pregnant Mui reads to her unborn child.”

Banquete de los muertos

Message from the Entz:

This is a reminder about what is usually the best night of the term – the JCR guest night.

The theme this term is ‘The Banquet of the Dead’ and the menu will be appropriately gruesome. There is huge scope for dressing up whether you opt to come as your own dead self, some kind of zombie creation or any celebrity of the dead variety. There will be pre-dinner champagne in the bar from 6.30pm with dinner at 7.15. Make this another night to remember… by bringing your cameras, there’s surely no hope otherwise!

Full JCR meeting tonight

This is from your secretary James:
Dear all,
I hope your weekend is ending well.
I am here to let you know of the wonderful opportunity that is the Full JCR meeting which will be taking place this Wednesday, the 11th of November, in the JCR before dinner at 17.00.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all HMC students, including MCR members, and especially all of you lovely freshers to:
  • learn what it is exactly the JCR committee does.
  • let us know what you would like the committee to do.
  • ask any queries about JCR/College matters.
As the following week will see the nominations begin for the election of a new JCR committee, it would be amazing if as many of you as possible attended. All are welcome to stand for election to committee and I hope that some of you newer students will stand. This Wednesday will be the perfect time to get your bearings and decide if this is something you might want to do.
Come on. Democracy in action. Does it get any better?
James
JCR Secretary

Tweaking around

As you can see, the outlook of the blog has been updated, as well as the accompanying header picture. Thanks for Lisanne, Esmeralda, Florian and for the rest of you! Also, I have added an introduction for those who aspire to apply to HMC (thanks OUSU), and the JCR constitution for reasons explained on the page.

If you want something posted on the blog, just let me know!

I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey.

JCR. Tonight. Costume optional but preferrable.

Let’s do the time warp again.

You’re lucky, he’s lucky, I’m lucky, we’re all lucky!

That’s a rather tender subject. Another slice, anyone?

Almost there

I just thought to remind you that the long vacation will be over in two days’ time. A bit of good news: the library is open again, and all cleaned up and nice (Jen and Caroline working the a$$es off, with Danish and I occasionally contributing). Which is great, because the list of collections is already up, and you know you’ll need to go and revise. What better place to do that than in the library?

If you have been in the Wine Team at any point, you may be interested to know that the memorial service of our sponsor and mentor, Mr Graham Pye will be held tomorrow, Sat 3rd October, at 11am in the Christ Church Cathedral.

And on Sunday, Joan Baez will be in Oxford, which has nothing to do with anything, except that I love her, and so should you.

This picture is here just to intimidate you

Quiz: the building in this picture is not Sheldonian. What is it…?

September 25, 2009

Here’s the part that got omitted yesterday, because my internet connection wasn’t working properly:

Friday 1st week

KARAOKE – textually shouted because that’s what most of us (especially me) sound like! We’re all rubbish so don’t worry. You’ll have plenty of time to build up courage as the mike is in pretty constant demand by the rest of us shy and retiring types!

Friday 3rd week

Rocky Horror Bop – oh yes, it’s Halloween and in order to fulfil the general bop requirements of enabling the boys to dress up as girls we have resorted to this old favourite. Get in to your fishnets and prepare to strut your funky stuff!

So looking forward to meeting you all and deafening you with my hideous singing voice

Laura xxx

Note: there ought to be one more bop this term besides the one advertised here, and a guest night with theme at around 7th week. Keep posted to find out.
